Lisa L. DeCaro and Leonard Matheo are the founders of Courtroom Performance, Inc., a trial consulting firm dedicated to improving oral advocacy, and authors of the book, The Lawyer’s Winning Edge: Exceptional Courtroom Performance. Professional actors and directors, each has over 15 years of experience in theater, film, and television. Ms. DeCaro and Mr. Matheo have helped thousands of attorneys and their witnesses prepare for deposition and trial, by employing the professional actor’s techniques of effective story analysis, story structure, and persuasive presentation. CPI consultants have practical experience in hundreds of cases in the areas of civil plaintiff, civil defense, and criminal defense ranging from simple to complex litigation. They have prepared attorneys and witnesses for trial, deposition (video and paper), arbitration, and mediation. They have assisted in complex commercial litigation in the areas of product liability, trade mark infringement, sexual harassment, wrongful termination, breach of contract, medical malpractice, insurance bad faith, patent law, personal injury, and legal malpractice defense. CPI consultants have assisted in victories involving many Fortune 100 companies, on both the Plaintiff’s and the Defendant’s side of the courtroom. Clients include counsel for Ford Motor Company; Chrysler Motor Corporation; Toyota; Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Solvay Pharmaceuticals; Coors Brewing Company; American Family Insurance, and others. Ms. DeCaro and Mr. Matheo are active members of the American Society of Trial Consultants and the Association for Continuing Legal Education. Both are frequent speakers at regional seminars and national conventions (including the annual conference of the ABA Litigation Leadership Section and many state bar programs), and have served as faculty for colleges and conferences nationwide (including UCLA Law School and UC Boulder School of Law). In addition to their book, Ms. DeCaro and Mr. Matheo have also authored popular papers and articles for national legal publications (including ALI-ABA’s Practical Litigator, ABA’s Tips from the Trenches,The Brief, and Lawyers Weekly USA). Through seminars, workshops, publication, and trial consulting, they teach litigators how to compose a compelling opening statement and closing argument, how to use non-verbal communication and eye contact to emphasize their message, how to build a relationship with each juror, how to call the jurors to action, and how to advance their story through each element of the trial.
